When someone hears about Peñafiel, the subconscious takes them to the world of wine. Bottles, barrels and wine cellars take over the traveller's mind, but visiting Peñafiel is much more than setting foot on the cradle of the Ribera del Duero. To visit Peñafiel is to travel back in time without the need for a time machine; it is to open the palate to the flavours of yesterday, today and tomorrow; it is to experience first-hand the culture, art and tradition forged over the centuries. It is, in short, to look back with a sidelong glance, while walking forward with a firm step.

The Villa de Rueda is located in the south of the province, 40 km from Valladolid.

The first historical mention of "Roda" dates back to the 10th century. During the 17th century, King Felipe IV granted it the title of villa. Since then, there is documentary evidence of the relationship between Rueda and wine and why its wine is world renowned.

And the city of Valladolid, the former capital of Spain, is very famous for its pinchos, and you can't leave without trying more than one.

Day 1: CITY OF ORIGIN VALLADOLID
Arrival and accommodation in a 4* Hotel in the city centre. Tapas night.

Day 2: RIBERA DEL DUERO
VISIT PEÑAFIEL CASTLE: Provincial wine museum.
Any lover of wine and the vast culture that centuries of history have interwoven around it should include it in their itinerary. In addition to being a suggestive museum proposal, it has become, since its foundation, the axis on which all wine tourism in the province is based.

VISIT TO THE PROTOS WINERY
The visit begins in the ageing cellar (located under the castle of Peñafiel), where there is an extensive tour of the underground galleries excavated in the interior of the mountain, followed by a visit to the new cellar designed by the architect Richard Rogers. It includes a commented tasting of our rosé wine Aire de Protos, Protos Crianza and Protos Reserva. At the end of the visit everyone will be given a nice souvenir of Bodegas Protos.

MENU IN THE RESTAURANT
The dining room is an old underground cellar where you will be able to enjoy the suckling lamb of native breeds of Castilla y Leon, roasted in a wood-fired oven and grilled with vine shoots.
Traditional menu:
  • Blood sausage at the centre of the table 
  • Suckling lamb (lechazo) roasted in a wood-fired oven.
  • Salad of lettuce, tomato and onion.
  • Dessert, bread and water
Rest of the afternoon and dinner free.

Day 3: RUEDA- CITY OF ORIGIN
VISIT TO BODEGA SANTAMARIA IN RUEDA
An hour and a half walk through the vineyard, followed by a visit to the winery and a tasting of 2 wines accompanied by cheese and/or cold meats. At the end lunch according to our suggestions and return home.
